LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

KULTREBEL was created in Tiohtià:ke, the land most know as Montréal. This has never been neutral ground. For thousands of years it has been a gathering place, a crossroads where nations met to trade, share stories, and shape culture long before anyone called it a city. It is the traditional and unceded territory of the Kanien’kehà:ka (Mohawk), one of the nations of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Tiohtià:ke has also long been a meeting place for the Anishinaabeg and other First Peoples, a site of exchange and conflict, survival and renewal. That history didn’t vanish with colonization; it is still alive in the languages spoken, the knowledge carried, and the communities who continue to shape this place today.

As a team, we recognize that the arts and culture we write about and celebrate doesn’t exist in a vacuum. It unfolds on land with a history older and deeper than the scenes, movements, and stories we cover. We acknowledge this not as a box to check but as a responsibility, to learn, to listen, and to reflect on how stories are told, who gets heard, and whose voices risk being silenced.

KULTREBEL makes this acknowledgment with respect, with gratitude, and with the understanding that we are guests here, and that honoring this land means committing to more than words.
